With you and your puppy home alone in the room your puppy spends most of it s time and with no other distractions say your puppy s name in a positive happy voice and hope to get their attention. When she is looking away from you say her name in a happy excited voice and make sure she comes to you. Do a few sessions at 2 seconds then 3 seconds then 4 try to eventually get your puppy to pay attention to you for at least 5 seconds before rewarding.
Then repeat the sequence. Say your puppy s name and add come and show the squeaky toy or treat. Say his name in a clear voice. Be sure there are no distractions to compete for the dog s attention.
Once your puppy understands what come means and routinely obeys without distractions it s time to challenge their recall ability. Reward your puppy when he comes to you upon hearing his name. Don t chase your dog. Train your dog to respond to his name by calling him in a happy voice.
Wait until he loses interest in you. You may need to reel in her leash. Call your puppy s name give your puppy about five feet of leash and let her wander around for a little while. Hold up a toy or treat then say your dog s name followed by come in a clear excited tone.
If he doesn t turn and look when you say his name don t repeat it. Start calling your puppy s name and when he turns to look at you mark immediately but leave it 2 seconds before giving the treat so he has to hold his attention on you longer. As soon as your dog comes to you reward it then praise it lavishly but try not to cause overexcitement. When the puppy arrives throw a huge party with the treat or toy reward.
Pay attention to him for a minute or so. If necessary make movements such as tapping your knees and stepping backward.
